The Hideout Town Council held an official canvass Tuesday night to recognize last week’s referendum, in which a strong majority of voters approved the town’s annexation into Summit County.
The Hideout Council, meeting as the Board of Canvassers, certified that 270 ballots were cast, with one rejected for being late.
In the final tally, 182 ballots were cast in favor, and 87 ballots were against.
The vote supported the Town Council’s annexation ordinance approved last October 16, in which the Wasatch County municipality added 350 acres extending into Summit County near Richardson Flat. The property, called Silver Meadows, is being planned by the town as a major commercial and residential center.
Summit County, however, has objected to its land being annexed without its consent and filed lawsuits.
After the votes were certified, the Hideout Council approved a proclamation, which, in part, recognized that Fourth District Court Judge Jennifer Brown granted a motion from Summit County to strike down the annexation. In the ruling, which came coincidentally on the same day as the referendum, the Judge found the town had not met a deadline to legally authorize the annexation.
The proclamation Hideout approved on Tuesday stated that the judge’s ruling has not been finalized.
It said that the annexation is still in effect—subject to any future rulings of the court or an appellate court.
