After a long winter, the 2019 Park City Farmers Market season kicks off Wednesday, with fresh produce at the ready.
The big snow year set local farmers back a bit, but Park City Farmers Market founder Volker Ritzinger says his farmers anticipate a good year for cherries, apricots and more.
"In two weeks, we’ll have the first crop of cherries," Ritzinger said. "This first Wednesday, we’ll have strawberries from the Week's farm up in Logan. They’re ready with their new tunneling system. They grow everything indoors, and we have a lot of greens and a lot of good stuff already the first week."
This is the second year the market will reside at the Silver King parking lot at Park City Mountain Resort, after spending 18 years at the Canyons Village parking lot and moving out due to construction. The market actually started at the Silver King lot 22 years ago, but its future location is up in the air with the upcoming Park City Mountain Resort base development. Ritzinger says Richardson Flat could serve as an ideal venue for the market to capture visitors from Wasatch and Summit Counties, but it would require some policy changes at the City level.
"People from Heber can get off on that road and get over there, and see the market and come shop," Ritzinger said. "People going to Kamas; people from Park City come out there; from the Junction coming in. It would be a great location for the farmers market."
The market features produce, arts and crafts, live music and more and is held every Wednesday from noon to 5 p.m. through October.
