Utah Governor Clarifies: Schools Will Not Provide Childcare During Closure

Saturday evening the office of Utah Governor Gary Herbert issued a clarification about comments Herbert made Friday regarding childcare while schools are closed for two weeks.

According to the statement, Herbert "mentioned that during public school's two-week dismissal, parents who are unable to be home with children will have the option to bring them to school to be supervised by teachers.  This is not the case."

The statement goes on to clarify that while school campuses will remain open for the next two weeks, it is only so students can retrieve personal items or pick up assignments from their teachers.

The Governor's Office also noted that during the two-week school closure, meal services to students will still be available, either as a grab-and-go lunch or breakfast program.  The options will vary by school.

Governor Herbert announced a mandatory closure of Utah's K-12 schools starting Monday, March 16th, to help contain the spread of COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus.
