The summer presents an uncertain future for many businesses and programs around Park City. Among those are the youth sport clubs. The summer camps they host are an important source of revenue for the clubs.
Emily Fisher is Executive Director of the Youth Sports Alliance, which works with seven winter-sport groups. She said it’s too early to tell what they’ll be doing for the summer.
“I know the clubs are looking at probably three different models. One is where training happens Virtually. One is where training happens 10 feet apart. And then one is where we could go back to normal operations.
A number of the sport clubs take out leases in the summer at the Utah Olympic Park. Colin Hilton, President of the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation, said the loss of the user fees isn’t a big financial impact for them. But it does affect the athletes if the camps don’t take place.
“We receive funding from the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee for our national team trainings. That we don’t expect to change. But certainly the club use will certainly start out at nothing, in terms of activity levels. We’ll just see how it goes through the summer. But it’s a critical period for the athletes and their training for winter sport. They’re quite honestly doing a lot of their practicing before they get on snow in the early winter. So we hope and we’re certainly planning for reduced activity levels.”
