Saturday’s backcountry avalanche in an area known as Square Top has claimed the life of a Park City man.

The skier who died in Saturday’s avalanche has been identified as Kurt Damschroder, a 57-year-old from Park City, according to a press release from Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

The avalanche was triggered by Damschroder and another skier Saturday around 3:30 p.m. outside the boundaries of Canyons Village.

Damschroder was caught in the avalanche. The other skier located Damschroder using a beacon. He attempted life-saving efforts for more than an hour before being forced to leave the area due to extreme avalanche danger.

Responders were able to complete mitigation work Sunday to get to the avalanche site and recover Damschroder’s body.

According to the press release Damschroder was a longtime Park City resident, who loved to spend time outdoors.
