Man in Critical Condition After Multi-Vehicle Crash on 40

A multi-vehicle crash on Highway 40 at mile marker 16, just north of Heber City, sent one man to the hospital in extremely critical condition and stopped traffic for a couple of hours Saturday afternoon.   The accident happened in the same area where 16 year-old Victor Benitez lost his life in a head-on collision five weeks earlier.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol, around 3:15pm a westbound Range Rover drifted into oncoming traffic, hitting a car in the middle turn lane.  The Range Rover then hit a trailer being towed by a pickup in onoming traffic, then hit a Subaru Legacy.  It took rescuers almost an hour to get the male driver out of the Legacy.   Traffic was stopped in both directions on the highway so a medical helicopter could land.  The victim was flown to the hospital where he is in extremely critical condition.

The accident is under investigation.

Benitez was driving a Mazda 6 on Highway 40 on June 29th around 3:30pm when a Toyota Highlander traveling east crossed over into the westbound lanes and hit his car.  That accident happened at mile marker 15.  On Valentine's Day, 2017, three people were killed after an eastbound Honda Civic drifted across the center lane of Highway 40 at milemarker 14 and crashed into a Kia Rio.  A fourth person died a few days later at the hospital.
