Thousands Attend Utah Counterculture Fest

UINTA NATIONAL FOREST, Utah (AP) - A county jail easy of Salt Lake City is nearly full in part because of the influx of thousands of people for the Rainbow Family gathering.

KSL-TV reports that Wasatch County Sheriff's officials say a third of the prisoners in the 100-person jail are from the gathering, which has brought 5,900 people to the area in a four-day celebration of love and peace.

Chief Deputy Jared Rigby says deputies are working non-stop to monitor the happenings at the gathering. Rigby says one recently married deputy had to cancel his honeymoon.

Nearly 10,000 people are expected at the gathering by Friday.

That's how many went to the festival in Montana last year, where law enforcement racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in cost.
