Wasatch High Wrestling Aims To Take Home Another Title

Wasatch wrestling is looking to take home another state title this week.

Wasatch High School will be looking to capture yet another team title in wrestling this week. The 5A state tournament takes place Wednesday and Thursday at the UCCU event center on Utah Valley University’s campus in Orem. Adding another championship won’t be an easy task however. At the divisional qualifying tournament two weeks prior to the state tournament Wasatch lost by one point to Box Elder. Despite the close loss the wasps qualified 18 wrestlers for the state tournament, among those qualifying included six division champions.

The wasps will be led by Senior Zak Kohler. If Kohler is able to secure another championship the senior will join the prestigious four-time state champion club. Other Wasps that will contend for a state title in the tournament include Mitchell Slack, Deklan Kelly, River Wardle, Sammy Heywood, Stockton O’Brien and Porter Chamberlain.

Meanwhile the 4A and 3A state tournaments will take place on Friday and Saturday at the UCCU event center.

Park City High School qualified two wrestlers for the 4A state championship tournament, Jared Miller and Stone Combs will represent the Miners.

South Summit high qualified 14 wrestlers for the 3A state tournament and placed third in the divisional tournament.  Wildcat coach Jake Woolstenhulme says the team won’t compete for a title but will be competitive.

“We ended up 3rd at our divisional tournament,” Coach Woolstenhulme said. “We were just a few points out of 2nd with the best team in the state in our same division with us. I believe we definitely could be top three in the state after the state tournament.”

The Wildcats had three divisional champions. Taigon Bushell, Edgar Gandarilla, and Jed Lee. Coach Woolstenhulme says he thinks it’s fair to expect all three of those wrestlers to make the finals, he also outlined some other standout wrestlers.

“I have another senior McCall Rose,” Coach Woolstenhulme continued. “He’s done well if he can keep his head on straight, he should be right there at the top as well he’s got a good shot. Brice Clegg, he was 2nd at our divisional tournament and I anticipate him placing pretty high in the state. Xander Lindsey he’s a sophomore, took 3rd at the divisional tournament he’s probably top three in the state. At heavyweight I have a junior named Nephi Antillon. He took third at the divisional tournament he’s probably top three in the state as well.”

The 2A State tournament took place over last weekend. North Summit’s Ethan Crittenden, Ryker Pentz and Tyler Scheurn all won individual titles for the braves.
