Top Speller Wins Trip to National Bee

A 6th grade student at Ecker Hill Middle School has won herself a chance to compete in  this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee after winning the local competition Tuesday.

After Ethan Scott – an 8th grader at Rocky Mountain Middle School -  misspelled the word impetuous, Emilia Lytle – a 6th grader at Ecker Hill Middle School - was able to correctly spell babushka for the win.

The 13th annual Park Record spelling bee was held Tuesday at the Egyptian Theater. Some 50 4th through 8th grade students had earned the right to compete in the district final after passing a written or oral qualifier at each of their schools.

This is the 5th year that the Park Record and its sponsors have helped send the  spelling bee champion  to the Scripps National Bee competition in Washington D.C. to be held in May.

A practice bee was held for the 2nd and 3rd graders prior to the competition. Nearly 40 students competed. Chloe Lleweylln – won that bee for the second year in a row. Chloe is a 3rd grader at Parley’s Park Elementary. She correctly spelled the words lilac and floss after Axel Solander – a 3rd grader at Park City Day School - misspelled the word pecan.

The National Scripps Spelling Bee will start May 27th. The final round is for Thursday, May 30th. The winner will emerge from some 11 million students who will have participated in local bees around the country.

Some of words from the online practice sheet for 8th graders include ligatures, unguents and proboscis.
