The Tour of Utah bicycle race has been cancelled for the second year in a row due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2021 edition of the Tour of Utah was taken off the UCI’s road racing calendar last week, leaving only one American UCI event on the schedule this year, the Maryland Cycling Classic in September.
The 2020 edition of the Utah stage race was also cancelled at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last spring.
Chairman of the Tour Steve Miller said in a statement:
“Due to the challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah and the Tour of Utah Ultimate Challenge are postponed in 2021. We continue to plan for resuming these events in 2022.”
Originally scheduled for July 26th to August 1st, the Tour is known unofficially as “America’s Toughest Stage Race” with breathtaking scenery and grueling mountain climbs hallmarks of the route each year.
Park City has been a finish location for several stages over the years, most recently in 2019.
The cancellation comes as city hall has begun contemplating its summer events schedule and what a scaled-down Fourth of July celebration could look like.
Even with vaccinations increasing across the country, the coming months of the pandemic are still a mystery as Utah has seen a slight uptick in cases over the last weeks. It is currently unclear what health restrictions for events will be in place this summer.
