Park City announced at Thursday night’s city council meeting that the public hearing for the future arts and culture district will be held on March 31st.
City council work sessions to hammer out the details of the proposed arts and culture district began last fall and now the public will finally get their chance to weigh in on the project later this month.
Mayor Andy Beerman disclosed at Thursday evening’s city council meeting that the public hearing will take place on March 31st.
Councilor Steve Joyce told KPCW the meeting will not feature him and his fellow councilors to any great extent, and will instead be more of an opportunity to really gauge the community’s interest in continuing the project, which currently has a price tag hovering around the $100 million mark.
“I think it’s gonna be just a whole lot of listening from our standpoint,” said Joyce. “Most of the feedback that we’ve gotten from people when we’ve had art and culture meetings has been very supportive of doing the art and culture district. I’ve heard more kind of personal, you know, one-on-one kinds of things where people are concerned about the expense and how we’re gonna pay for it and what the opportunity costs are, but we haven’t heard that much from people on that kind of note, so I think it will be interesting to see.”
Beerman also said on Thursday a community roundtable event will also be scheduled for two days prior to the meeting on the 29th. That event will feature former mayor Jack Thomas, who Beerman said helped lay the groundwork for the project during his time at city hall from 2014-18.
“Two days prior we’re looking at having a roundtable,” Beerman said. “Max [Doilney] and I will dust off the roundtable and do a special one Monday evening and we have a very special guest, Jack Thomas, the former mayor and the one that sort of initially conceived the concept of the arts and culture district and worked with the stakeholders and was very much a part of the intense public outreach up front that made us decide to go forward. He’s gonna come in and talk about that experience and share it with the community.”
A formal announcement from city hall with full details on the public hearing and roundtable event are expected in the near future.
