High Valley Transit Officially Rolls Out Transit Services

KPCW News

Heads-up Summit County public transit riders, some bus routes will look different starting Thursday.

High Valley Transit is fully rolling out its bus and shuttle service Thursday after a soft launch that began in May. The transit district serves the Snyderville Basin area, which was formerly on Park City bus routes.

One major change will combine the 6-Lime route and the 7-Pink into a new route, the 101-Spiro connector, which will offer service from Jeremy Ranch all the way to Deer Valley, with buses arriving every 15 minutes. Bus and shuttle services will still be free under High Valley Transit.

Silver Springs will be the most directly affected by the changes in service. However, General Manager for High Valley Transit Caroline Rodriquez said riders in the neighborhood can use the new microtransit service, which offers free on-demand rides.

"If you had a bus yesterday, you will have a bus tomorrow, we worked really hard not to leave anyone without service," Rodriquez said. "And in fact, we expanded service quite a bit."

In the immediate future, Rodriquez said the district is looking at building a transit depot on the Gillmor Parcel, near Silver Creek. She added, riders can expect two new buses by the fall.

The service is being rolled out after 18 months of prep work. Rodriquez said the district was able to stay under their $12 million budget for the year.

She said the coronavirus pandemic offered the time to plan for the big changes.

"It gave us an opportunity, it was certainly a silver lining, because it gave us the sort of bandwidth to look at how we could make some changes while ridership had decreased and not impact a lot of people," she said.

Masks will be required on the buses.

She said she’s hoping to offer a smooth transition from Park City transit’s “excellent” service.

"There's always things to be done and improved on and made better," she said. "But in general, we're ready for service. We have some great drivers, I'm sure people have seen them out on the routes practicing, all our buses are wrapped and ready to go."

For a list of the full changes in bus routes you can download the High Valley Transit App which shows both High Valley and Park City transit routes. High Valley also has a phone line to book rides at 435-246-1538.
