Lost Hiker on Rob’s Trail Helped by Search and Rescue Helicopter

Renai Bodley Miller

A lost hiker on Rob’s Trail near the Canyons Village was helped by instructions from a search and rescue helicopter Monday.

Summit County Sheriff's Lieutenant Andrew Wright says search and rescue was notified of a 24-year-old woman who got lost hiking on Rob’s Trail shortly before 3pm Monday afternoon.

Coincidentally, a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter was in the area and responded right away.

Wright says the woman was hiking with her father before the two became separated. He says the woman told dispatch she was feeling faint and did not have food or water.

“If someone’s exhausted in the heat and doesn’t have water or food, I would imagine she was probably exhausted and definitely, probably getting into dehydration,” Weight says. “Other than that, DPS helicopter was able to successfully guide her back to the trailhead and we were able to reunite her with her father.”

The woman did not require medical attention.

The Park City Fire District has seven stations throughout Summit County ready to respond to an emergency in the mountains. Wright says the best number to call if there is an emergency or you become lost on the trails is 911.

“If someone feels like they’re in distress, whether it’s because they’re dehydrated, hungry, lost, injured, it doesn’t matter what it may be, absolutely call 911 so that we can get resources there quickly,” he says.

Wright says the sooner a person in distress can call 911 during an emergency in the mountains, the better.
