Park City School Board Will See Master Planning Options On April 16

PCSD

The Park City School District has been working on a master plan since last fall. The process is coming to an end with the consultants presenting facilities options to the school board on April 16th.

Clio Rayner is an architect and consultant with the firm GSBS. She says the mission is to take existing school facilities and understand how they will meet future educational needs. They decided they needed a clear vision which started with a district strategic plan. A community summit was held from which they developed guiding principles to help define education needs for the future.

“So, we took that information and started to develop an education specification and that ed spec takes those guiding principles and applies them to facility recommendation for learning spaces. So for example, things like variable flexible furniture and adjacencies of spaces to other spaces and it talks about how facilities can serve the educational vision."

They’ve reviewed the physical conditions of the district’s buildings looking at mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems. They’ve also considered the structural and architectural aspects as well as school location. Task forces evolved that explored five key areas including the future of Treasure Mountain Junior High School, the Kearns Campus, class and school sizes and grade alignment.

“And so, we took that information and took those groups and asked them to develop criteria to evaluate possible approaches for the master plan. And so instead of asking them to solve those problems in those meetings we asked them to develop that criteria for evaluation.”

Rayner says the April 16th Board of Education meeting will be the first time the school board, the task forces, strategic planning committee and the public will see the master planning options. However, there will not be cost breakdowns available.

“So, now that we’ve collected all this information, we’re moving on to the next step in the plan which is the development of options. And how that's going to come together, is those options are going to be evaluated using the criteria that have been pulled from all of the process to date.”

Between the school board meetings on April 16th and May 21st, another survey will go out to the public asking for input on the options.

“The board will meet on the 16th and all those interested parties can be present at that conversation. The next day the Steering Committee will meet and start to talk about what they think about those options and what they think about that evaluation matrix and give us their thoughts.”

Rayner doesn’t know when GSBS will produce the cost analysis for the master planning options. It’s uncertain when the school board will approve the master plan. School Board President Andrew Caplan says they’ll continue to collect input from the community for as long as needed before making any final decisions.
