The idea for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline originated with Utah lawmakers back in 2022, after state data found a disproportionate number of youth who end their lives identified as LBTBQ+.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports many programs serving vulnerable populations have been cut since Trump’s return to the White House.
A leaked U.S Department of Health and Human Services draft budget proposal indicates that may also be the fate for the office that coordinates tailored help for LGBTQ+ teens in crisis who dial 988.
Lawmakers who helped bring 988 to fruition say whether or not the specific services for LGBTQ+ youth continue, there will still be access to the crisis line.
Other nonprofit resources for LGBTQ+ people, like The Trevor Project and the Trans Lifeline, will also remain available.
If you or people you know are a risk of self-harm, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Linfeline for 24-hour support. Specialized help for LGBTQ+ youth can be accessed by calling the Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386, or by texting “START” to 678-678.
