Utah-led national crisis lifeline could lose DHHS funding

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline call center in Salt Lake City, where all Utah calls are routed, is pictured on Friday, Nov. 4, 2022. The call center, one of many across the country, continues to grow as they provide immediate access to crisis intervention and support for behavioral health.

A national three-digit suicide and crisis hotline that offers specialized support for the LGBTQ+ community may be defunded under President Donald Trump.

The idea for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline originated with Utah lawmakers back in 2022, after state data found a disproportionate number of youth who end their lives identified as LBTBQ+.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports many programs serving vulnerable populations have been cut since Trump’s return to the White House.

A leaked U.S Department of Health and Human Services draft budget proposal indicates that may also be the fate for the office that coordinates tailored help for LGBTQ+ teens in crisis who dial 988.

Lawmakers who helped bring 988 to fruition say whether or not the specific services for LGBTQ+ youth continue, there will still be access to the crisis line.

Other nonprofit resources for LGBTQ+ people, like The Trevor Project and the Trans Lifeline, will also remain available.

If you or people you know are a risk of self-harm, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Linfeline for 24-hour support. Specialized help for LGBTQ+ youth can be accessed by calling the Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386, or by texting “START” to 678-678.
