The vote fell along partisan lines. Four conservatives who opposed the legislation voted “present,” allowing the bill to move forward.
NPR reports the budget package expands income tax cuts approved during President Donald Trump’s first term and adds new ones, including no taxes on tips and overtime pay.
It also proposes big spending increases for border security and defense.
Critics of the bill say it will add to the national debt. A nonpartisan watchdog group estimates it will add $3.3 trillion to the debt over the next decade.
Supporters, meanwhile, say other Trump policies, like deregulation, will spur economic growth and cover that gap.
The budget package, known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” will now head to the full House of Representatives for a vote.
