Rocky Canyon fire 95% contained two weeks after sparking in Wasatch Back

The burn scar from the Rocky Canyon Fire can be seen from the crew's camp.

The Rocky Canyon Fire has burned nearly 16,500 acres since it sparked Aug. 7.

Now two weeks later, the fire is 95% contained with crews focused on patrolling and cleaning up burned areas.

Utah Fire Info reports residents may continue to see smoke inside the fire line, with some areas likely to smolder until the winter.

Residents are asked not to report the smoke unless it is outside the burn scar.

Fire crews are not expecting to reach 100% containment for some time due to steep, rugged and rocky terrain in the Bishop’s Canyon area on the Morgan-Summit County border.

Since Jan. 1, Utah has seen nearly 900 wildfires. Almost half of those have been human caused.

This time last year, about 800 wildfires had been reported with 74% caused by humans.
