FREE PROGRAM: "Emigrants' Guide: the Historic and Harrowing Hastings Cutoff and the Donner Party's Route through Echo Canyon." - August 24, 2024
Lansford Warren Hastings’ “Emigrants’ Guide to Oregon and California” promised a route that would be a “short-cut” for migrants heading west. Published in 1845, this new guidebook, along with Hastings’ personal promise, led the Donner-Reed Party across Summit County and Utah before they ultimately met their tragic fate in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Join Lyuba Basin, Rare Books Librarian at the Marriott Library, as she shares Lansford Hastings’ original “Emigrants’ Guide” from the Library’s Special Collections and explores the Donner Party’s efforts to follow the new route. Saturday August 24, 4pm at the Historic Echo Church. Admission is FREE!
