Some heavy downpours of rain earlier this week resulted in flash floods hitting the Chalk Creek area above Coalville—and in one case, sweeping a car off the road.
County Public Works Director Derrick Radke said they actually had a couple of episodes. Flooding struck Chalk Creek on Tuesday night at about 9:30, leaving as much as a foot and a half of material in one spot. He said the crews had the road cleaned up by 12:30 that nights.
On Wednesday, they saw flooding at several different spots along the road.
“It was earlier in the afternoon. We had a big flash flood go across the Chalk Creek basin and we had several mud slides come out along the roadway from the narrows up to the Upton area and maybe, I think there was actually one area slightly above that." Radke continued, "We had a bunch of mud and rocks and debris come out on the road.”
The Wednesday flooding swept a car off the road. Tyler Rowser from the North Summit Fire District said the one occupant of the vehicle, a woman, was able to get out with the help of a bystander who had stopped behind her.
Radke said it didn’t take long to clean up after the flooding.
“We got it all pushed off. Roads were cleared up within a couple of hours." Radke explained, "Of course, we need to go back and sweep them when the mud dries a little bit, but they’re passable.”
