Park City Rolls With The Punches In Spite Of Staffing Issues

With Park City’s Assistant City Attorney Polly Samuels McLean off on paid administrative leave due to her legal issues and City Engineer Nestor Gallo’s recent resignation due to personal issues – the city is working double-time to fill those gaps. The question is – how has it impacted the city’s budget?  Melissa Allison has more:

Staff in the city’s legal and engineering departments are working hard to cover the responsibilities usually handled by Assistant Attorney Polly Samuels McLean and City Engineer Nestor Gallo.

McLean is on paid administrative leave due to the legal issues stemming from her arrest on September 6. She and her husband Andrew have been formally charged with one count of theft and one count of criminal mischief, both misdemeanors.

Adding the to the city’s burden, newly appointed City Engineer Nestor Gallo recently resigned due to family issues.

Dias said they’re rolling with the punches.

“We’ve got a wonderful team up there at City Hall and we’ve also contracted with Jody Burnett who has been working with the city for years as part of the Treasure and planning commission process,” Dias said. “So, we have an expert there that was on hand that we were able to bring on immediately. And then in terms of engineering we have procured a contract with an outside engineering firm to fill in while we’re procuring a city engineer. You know it’s a very unfortunate situation but that happens in life, people have personal situations. We miss Nestor dearly and we wish him well and we know that the public enjoyed working with him and we’re very sorry for that.”

Dias said the engineering department is not suffering thanks to the engineering staff.

“The folks in our engineering department have been doing a wonderful job Corey Legge in particular was out there this weekend for the Prospector paving project that’s going on in one portion of our town,” Dias said. “He’s a young guy, came out of grad school and he’s been doing a wonderful job filling in so we’re very, very thankful to him and Deb in our engineering department.”

Dias said the impacts to the city’s budget is minimal considering the scope of the responsibilities. The city is doing a national search to fill the city engineer position.

As for McLean - Dias said it’s a waiting game at this point.

“We’re still, you know, waiting for more information and pending that investigation, the outcome, and we do think it will be relatively soon,” Dias said. “So, her status is the same and we’re just waiting for the judicial process to take its place.”

While its hard to predict everything that could happen when creating a budget – Dias said fortunately the recent events haven’t done too much damage.

“I think the cost to the city’s budget in this regard, shall be somewhat negligible as a result of not having to pay the existing salary for the engineer that just left,” Dias said. “So, the recruitment process will obviously cost us some money but having not to pay for a salary will be able to reimburse for the contractual services.”

The city’s council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday.
