Wendy Crossland Selected As Park City School Board Member For District 3 Seat

The Park City School Board selected the replacement for the open seat vacated by Petra Butler last fall.  There vote was three to one in favor of Wendy Crossland.  Carolyn Murray has this:

Park City School Board President Andrew Caplan said they had six excellent candidates to choose from for the open school board position.  It’s the District 3 seat.

Caplan said they were looking for a candidate with children in secondary school in order to balance out the existing board.

“The board made a decision in favor of Wendy for a number of reasons. She has a legal background, she’s a teacher, she obviously has a Master’s in Education, has been an educator for a number of years, is a champion of equity, speaks fluent Spanish and also, most importantly, she has two children in high school. You know, if we look at a matrix of experiences, you know personal experiences certainly, you know we don’t have a board member with children in secondary school and certainly that was very important to us especially as we are in the midst of master planning where there’s going to be a lot of decisions made about secondary schools. So, we thought she rounded out the board nicely and we’re excited to have her."

Newly elected board member Kara Hendrickson was the one dissenting vote. She nominated Francis Fu. Three members voted in favor of Crossland with no furthur discussion.

“It was a difficult decision for all of us. We had six applicants who were very highly qualified.  We had a seventh applicant who wasn’t able to participate because they lived across the street from the boundary. And of course you know, the boundary maps are a little unclear. It was probably the most, certainly the most people who have applied or run in the last five or six years for a district spot so we were very, very pleased. The dissenting vote was in favor of candidate Francis Fu who was also an outstanding candidate.

Caplan was re-elected President of the board after serving for the 2017-18 school year. He will serve until the end of his board term which is December 2020.
