Park City Holds First State Of The City Address And 'Pieluck'

Park City is holding its first stand-alone State of the City address this evening, featuring remarks from the mayor, a Q&A session with the City Council—and pie and ice cream.

It might seem a little stuffy to have a formal event to communicate policy to the public, but Park City Mayor Andy Beerman views tonight’s State of the City forum as a way for the public and city government to socialize and talk openly about issues that are important to the community.

"We thought doing a State of Park City might be a good way to have a mid-winter celebration and engage the community," Beerman said. "So, this is more about having a party and a celebration and a forum for everybody, and just celebrating our successes and talking about what we should do next."

Beerman will touch on the city’s four critical priorities: housing, energy, transportation and social equity. There won’t be a deep dive into the priorities, but rather an update on initiatives relating to each. Specifically, Beerman said a new metric for meeting the city’s transportation goals will be announced.

"There’s been a lot of talk over the years—we have a very straightforward energy goal to be net-zero by 2030; a housing goal of 800 units by 2026; but transit, we had about 60 different metrics we were using, and that’s hard to communicate and understand," Beerman said. "So, we’re going to roll out our goal that we agreed on at the retreat, which is a 25% reduction in traffic on our entry corridors. That’s about 5 million fewer cars by 2030."

The State of the City takes place this evening, from 6-8 p.m., at the Santy Auditorium at the Park City Library. The first hour of the event will feature Beerman’s remarks and the Q&A session, and the last hour is the “pieluck” portion. They’ll be serving June Pies and Wasatch Creamery ice cream. KPCW will be broadcasting Beerman’s address live.
