Recycle Utah Plans For Dumpster Days

Recycle Utah

The biannual popular Recycle Utah event known as Dumpster Days is coming up. As always, there are a few guidelines that need to be followed if you plan to drop off your stuff.

Recycle Utah has a few reminders about Dumpster Days. It’s scheduled for May 31 to June 2. Haley Lebsack is Director of Communications with Recycle Utah and says they’ll have two dumpsters at the center on Woodbine Way.

“One for large household waste, one for yard waste. No business waste.  No hazardous materials. No fridges. No mattresses. You must be able to lift the items into the bin. I can’t guarantee that a volunteer is going to be bigger than me and I am only five-foot-four.”

Lebsack says they’ve tried to hold a few fix-it clinics to encourage people to reduce the amount of waste they put  into the landfill.

“We’ve tried to host a few fix-it clinics before with seamstresses, bike mechanics and electronics fixers. They tend to have not been very popular in our community. There are a few in Salt Lake that we will direct people to that are a little bigger. They have more of the resources than we have at our center.”

Lebsack says RU takes the opportunity to use Dumpster Days to start conversations about other ways people can reduce and reuse items.

“People bring us perfectly good, wonderful dining tables and they can take them to our warehouse or the Christian Center. Or, they’ve brought us filing cabinets that if they’re dented or ruined, can still get recycled. So, we do try and divert as much as we can from what people bring us that day."

Recycle Utah has their Uncorked event coming up on June 21 starting at 5:30. It’s a party sponsored by Ace Recycling and Disposal and the proceeds go toward RU’s glass recycling programs. Tickets are $7.00 at the door for an evening of food, drinks and live music, right there at the RU parking lot on Woodbine Way.

This year, Dell is sponsoring a free electronic waste collection during the event.
