I-80 Westbound Down To One Lane Wednesday And Possibly Thursday Night Starting At 8 PM

Leslie Thatcher

Travelers westbound on I-80 between Kimball Junction and Salt Lake City had very long delays on Tuesday night beginning around 6 PM. If you are planning to travel west to the Salt Lake Valley, UDOT has authorized closing two of the three westbound lanes beginning at 8PM on Wednesday and Thursday.

Some motorists complained that it took an hour and a half to travel from Kimball Junction to Salt Lake City on Tuesday evening. UDOT spokesperson, John Gleason said they’re doing sealant work on the bridges and the contractor shut down two of the three lanes in order to get the product down and cured before night-time cool weather set in.

“We have the project in Parley’s Canyon right now where we’re putting on a protective coating on the bridges. Part of the paving project that we did last year from parley’s Summit to Lamb’s Canyon”

UDOT directed the contractor to push back closing lanes until 8 PM. This will affect two lanes westbound and may extend to Thursday night.

“What that does mean is we could see an additional night of work as a result of pushing back some of those lane restrictions. But we feel like that’s worth the compromise right there because we’re going to allow people to get to where they’re going much more efficiently and not putting in any of those delays.”

KPCW will keep listeners informed about changes to UDOT’s project schedule in Parley’s Canyon.
