After both Summit and Wasatch Counties had record-breaking days of new COVID-19 infections this week, both counties saw a reduction in cases on Saturday.
Summit County’s 51 cases on Friday and Wasatch County’s 73 cases on Wednesday were the worst single day totals of new COVID-19 infections both counties have seen since the start of the pandemic.
Both counties saw a dip in cases over the weekend, however, with Summit County cutting their record-breaking day in half and only reporting 26 new cases on Saturday and Wasatch reporting 41.
Utah is currently in the midst of a post-Thanksgiving surge in cases that has seen the seven-day average of positive laboratory tests rise to alarming levels. Saturday’s average sat at 25.5%, the highest yet.
The Utah Department of Health recorded 3,674 new cases statewide on Wednesday. Utah’s record for cases in a day is over 4,600 from November 19th but this week has been one of the most consistently high for daily case counts, averaging over 3,000 a day since Monday.
The rolling 7-day average for positive tests is 2,958 per day.
The Health Department also reported 14 more deaths, bringing the statewide death toll from the disease to 939. None of the deaths reported on Saturday were from Summit or Wasatch County.
Governor Herbert announced this week the statewide mask order will remain in place until further notice. Almost the entire state is considered a high transmission area by the Health Department at the moment and social gatherings are strongly recommended to be under 10 people.
