Intermountain Park City Hospital Receives COVID-19 Vaccines

Intermountain Healthcare

Intermountain Park City Hospital received the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine Wednesday and started vaccinating healthcare workers the same day.

Wing Province is the medical director at the hospital. He said the arrival of the vaccine raised excitement and spirits.

"We were pretty cheesy about it; there's a lot of anticipation," Province said. "We even got pictures of when the truck arrived. It was escorted by police, which is kind of unique. And then, you know, just pictures of us unloading and doing all those kinds of fun things. So just, it's like Christmas, literally."

The hospital expects to vaccinate around 150 employees Wednesday, and by next week they hope to have offered the vaccine to all of the hospital's caregivers.

Province said the first two caregivers received the vaccine simultaneously.

"The first one, the one that I did, we're, we're calling her Santa Claus, because she's the real reason why we have all these vaccines," he said. "Her name is Laurie and she's our head pharmacist here at the hospital. She's the one that filled out all the paperwork to get it here so quickly. And then there's another woman here, who has been volunteering at the drive thru for six days a week. And we wanted to honor her and thank her for all her sacrifice and time."

He said they’re administering the vaccines “Park City style.”

"So we have nice music in the background and a fireplace projected onto this screen so that people feel cozy while they're here getting their arms stuck," he said.

Park City Hospital healthcare workers will receive the second dose of the vaccine 28 days after the first dose.

Even when caregivers have received both doses, Province said it doesn’t mean that they can rip off their masks and gather in big groups. But he did say the vaccine is the beginning of the end of the pandemic.
