Ice Sculptures Return to Midway This Weekend

Heber Valley Artisan Cheese

People still itching for more winter wonder after the holiday season, can head to Midway for a free ice sculpture exhibit this weekend.

Heber Valley Artisan Cheese is hosting an ice sculpture exhibit for the second year. The event will have 20 sculptures, which are about three feet tall/wide on average.

Grant Kohler the owner of the dairy farm and creamery said their decision to host it last year was pretty spur of the moment.

"You want me to tell you the honest truth," he said. "My wife was watching a hallmark movie and they did a nice sculpture thing. And so she got the idea that she wants it we ought to do. And so we tried it. And it was incredibly popular."

Last year was such a hit, he said, they added on more activities.

"This year, we added a component to it both Friday and Saturday," he said. "They are going to come up and do a live sculpture so people can watch if they want."

The event is free to the public. Kohler said it’s his way to show appreciation to the community.

"So we want to kind of give back until we kind of teamed up with businesses in Summit and Wasatch County and through our low concern with COVID, that we'd have a struggle getting people to participate," he said. "But we've been very pleased. People step up from that some have called and said, 'We missed you, we want to do it.' It's a free event, you can come and just enjoy and go through it at will. And so it's turned out to be really fun."

Kohler said there will be enough open space so that guests can socially distance. You can see the ice sculptures Friday and Saturday. The live demos will happen Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at noon.
