Miners football falls on Senior Night, Wasatch loses on the road, North and South Summit tally wins

Kyle Maguire

The high school football season is winding down, and on Friday night, the Park City Miners looked to extend their win streak to five on Senior Night. Wasatch and North Summit aimed to bounce back from last week’s losses, and South Summit tried to continue their unbeaten season.

It was the final home game of the regular season for the Park City Miners as they looked to extend their win streak to five games and celebrate senior night. But the Brighton Bengals had other plans, as they looked for their third win in a row.

Park City’s Carson Tabaracci put the first points on the board thanks to a short rush into the end zone. Brighton then took over the scoring with two touchdowns and a field goal before the Miners and Blake Tabaracci took it in the end zone with about a minute left in the first half. Heading into the locker rooms, Park City was down 17-14. After the half, Brighton scored a touchdown to make it 24-14.

After getting the ball back on an interception, Chase Beyer and Carson Tabaracci connected for a 75-yard touchdown pass for the Miners and to cut the deficit down, 24-21. Early in the fourth, Stephen Shagen made a 43-yard field goal to tie the game at 24-24. Park City’s defense tried to stop the Bengals but with 3:07 left, Brighton scored a field goal in what would be the game’s final points. Park City loses at home on Senior Night, 27-24, and snaps their 4-game win streak.

Park City falls to 4-4 on the year and will travel to Salt Lake next week to play the Skyline Eagles in the final game of the regular season. Coverage begins at 7pm here on KPCW.

Wasatch entered Friday night looking for a win after losing to Springville last week. The Wasps traveled down to Utah County Friday night to take on the Spanish Fork Dons.

Wasatch had no luck in scoring in the first half with the Dons getting two touchdowns including a 71-yard rushing touchdown. Spanish Fork continued the shutout into the second half with a 52-yard passing touchdown. The Wasps earned their first points of the game after a 5-yard touchdown pass.

Heading into the fourth, the score was 21-7. Spanish Fork scored twice in the fourth, including a 51-yard passing touchdown. The Wasps also scored two touchdowns, and tried to make a comeback, but it wasn’t enough. Spanish Fork wore down Wasatch, and gave the Wasps their second straight loss, 35-21. The Wasps fall to 5-3 on the year.

Wasatch is at home next week for their final home game of the regular season against the Provo Bulldogs.

The North Summit Braves were back at home this week, after a close loss against Layton Christian Academy.

The Monticello Buckaroos came in to Coalville 2-5 on the year, and were looking to capitalize on shutting out their opponent last week. The Braves came out strong, scoring 42 unanswered points in the first half.

North Summit continued the pile on in the second half with another touchdown in the third. Entering the fourth quarter, the Braves were up 48-0. The Buckaroos finally got on the board with a touchdown in the fourth, but the Braves responded with a 63-yard rushing touchdown from Carter McCowen. North Summit wins at home 54-20, and improves to 3-4 on the year. The Braves are on the road next week to Rich, to play the Rebels.

The South Summit Wildcats have been hot this season, entering Friday night with an unbeaten record of 7-0. The Wildcats played the American Leadership Academy Eagles, a charter school from Spanish Fork, at home this week. The first quarter was a quiet one with the Wildcats scoring a touchdown and the Eagles scoring a field goal. In the second, the fire was turned up. South Summit’s Treyton Sargent had a 60-yard rushing touchdown. The Eagles responded with an 80-yard pass for a touchdown. The Wildcats went on to score four more unanswered touchdowns in the first half, including the defense and Kayden Wolfe, scoring on a 49-yard fumble recovery.

After the half, American Leadership started the scoring with a 58-yard touchdown pass. That would be their last score of the game. The Wildcats went on to score another 22 points in the second half, including a safety in early in the fourth. South Summit continues their perfect season with the win, 64-14. The Wildcats improve to 8-0. South Summit will be on the road next week, to play the Judge Memorial Bulldogs.
