Suspect booked into jail for homicide after shooting victim found in Highland Estates

Summit County Sheriff's Office

Summit County Sheriff’s officers were notified Thursday morning of a man shot to death near a residence in Highland Estates.

The victim's housemate has been arrested and booked into the Summit County Jail on suspicion of murder and several other charges.

The dead man has been identified as 50-year-old John Krieg.  The Sheriff’s Office announced  the suspect is 58-year-old James Ramsdell.

According to investigators, Thursday morning, at about 6:50 a.m. Dispatch received a 911 call from a woman who said she was walking her dog on Countryside Circle in Highland Estates when she found the victim lying in the grass.

Sheriff deputies who responded to the scene determined Krieg died from a single gunshot to the chest.  Deputies also encountered Ramsdell, who had exited a nearby residence and had a gunshot wound to his hand.

Ramsdell was detained for questioning after receiving medical care.

An investigation determined that Ramsdell, who lives in the upper level of the house on Countryside Circle, and Krieg, who lived in a basement apartment, had been drinking alcohol in the early morning hours on the 7th.

The two men got into an altercation, exited the home, and at some point a small handgun was introduced.

Deputies were not contacted about the incident until Krieg’s body was found.

Ramsdell was booked into jail for murder, discharging a firearm, and three other charges.

Summit County Sheriff Justin Martinez will have further information on the case later Friday morning.
