Sundance audience awards, which are voted on by festivalgoers who attend the films, were awarded Friday to five features.
“Twinless” won the U.S. dramatic audience award, and “Andre Is An Idiot” took home the audience prize for U.S. documentaries.
The international audience awards were given to the documentary “Prime Minister” and the drama “DJ Ahmet.”
“East of Wall” was the audience favorite in the NEXT category, which highlights innovative storytelling.
On Friday special and grand jury prizes were also handed out for the same categories.
“Atropia” was awarded the grand jury prize in the U.S. dramatic competition, which came as a surprise to director Hailey Gates.
“I’m really overwhelmed,” Gates said. “This movie is so strange, and I did not think that anybody would be interested in a military industrial complex romantic comedy, but I guess you guys also like laughing at the flimsy American empire, so thank you so much.”
“Seeds” won the grand jury prize for U.S. documentary and “Sabar Bonda (Cactus Pear)” was named the grand jury award winner in the world dramatic competition.
“Cutting Through Rocks,” which is set in Iran, was awarded the grand jury prize in international documentaries.
The NEXT Innovator Award, whose jury consisted solely of filmmaker Elijah Wood, was given to “Zodiac Killer Project.”
