Post 14 represents Park City’s membership in the American Legion, an organization created by Congress after World War I to advocate for veterans, service members and their families.
The local group routinely holds a Memorial Day ceremony at the Park City Cemetery on Kearns Boulevard.
On May 26 the Park City Treble Makers will start the event with patriotic songs at 9:45 a.m. and the official ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. It’s expected to run for about half an hour.
Park City Mayor Nann Worel, who was a nurse with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, will be the keynote speaker.
American Legion Post 14 Adjutant Glenn Wright said the public is invited to share their stories of service.
“When I’ve run this in the past, I usually ask the people that are there, who are you here to remember? If anybody wants to remember somebody that died in service to their country. And I’ll have a couple stories.”
Wright spoke of the importance of Memorial Day.
“There’s a saying amongst the veterans’ community – all gave some and some gave all,” he said. “This is the day we honor the folks that have died in the service of our country.”
Wright said there have been several historical milestones in American war history over the past several weeks. They include the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, and the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, which marked the end of World War II.
