Cottonwood Heights Man Arrested Traveling 135 Miles Per Hour And Threatening Former U.S. Senator

Utah Highway Patrol

A Cottonwood Heights man was arrested on Tuesday night while driving 135 miles per hour on I-80 near Coalville.

Utah Highway Patrol Information Officer Nick Street says the State Bureau of Investigation is considering felony charges in the case involving the 36-year-year old Wasatch Front man. He allegedly was on his way to Missouri to kill former United States Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill. She served as a Missouri senator from 2007 to 2019.

A highway patrol officer was patrolling in Summit County near Coalville, in the very early morning hours on Wednesday. At about 12:45 AM, he observed a vehicle pass him eastbound at what he describes was a very high rate of speed. He says emergency lights were activated and then, the vehicle appeared to accelerate.  According to his summary, the officer says the speed was registered at more than 130 miles per hour as it traveled eastbound on I-80 passing other motorists with a disregard for people and property.  Another trooper successfully spiked the vehicle’s tires and Stahl was taken into custody.

The court filings state the offense is a felony and they find clear and convincing evidence that would constitute a substantial danger to the community. The report says Stahl made several real threats to Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill. He stated several times that he was on his way to kill her. Stahl is being held without bail.

Officers found an empty 12 pack of Budweiser beer and another partially consumed 12 pack. The defendant said he was taking Adderall, LSD and consuming beer. His medical condition was evaluated at the Summit County Fire station and he was cleared. On his way to the Summit County jail, he made verbal threats towards Senator McCaskill.

The defendant George William Stahl was arrested for six offenses including failure to stop or respond at command of the police, threat of terrorism, reckless driving, speeding, DUI alcohol/drugs or combination and possession or use of a controlled substance.
