Park City Councilmember Steve Joyce has announced that he will not seek reelection to a second term on city council.
Joyce’s first term as a city councilor is set to end in January 2022 and he told KPCW on Friday morning that he will not seek reelection to a second term this fall.
“Yeah, I can be completely definitive,” Joyce said. “I will not be running for reelection, so there’s an open opportunity for somebody out there.”
Joyce took office in early 2018 and served as a member of the Park City Planning Commission before seeking elected office.
Joyce said while his time on the council has been rewarding, he and his wife are looking to possibly relocate in the near future and said committing to another four-year term, if he were to win reelection, would not be the best decision for personal and family reasons.
“My wife Julie and I have been here for 16 years and we’ve kind of talked about, you know, is it time to go find someplace next or do we want to go spend a year over in Europe while we’re young enough to do it?” he said. “You know, for me, if I was running and I got elected, then that’s a pretty hard four year commitment. I don’t want to walk out halfway through it or something. I just got to the point where for personal and family reasons, it wasn’t a smart thing for me to do to commit for another four years. If I was staying here, I would do it in a heartbeat.”
There will be two council seats on the ballot this November, Joyce’s now open seat and the seat held by incumbent councilor Tim Henney. Henney has said he will be running for a third term.
The Park City Mayor’s office will also be on the ballot this year. Incumbent Mayor Andy Beerman has not made an official announcement of his candidacy yet, but has indicated he will likely be seeking a second term.
Candidates seeking elected office in Park City must file official paperwork with the city between June 1st and June 7th.
