Park City is ready for a busy week of events to celebrate the nations independence. The festivities begin the night before the 4th and continue through the weekend.
July 3rd will see a host of activities ahead of Independence Day celebrations. Free activities include the farmers market at Park City Mountain Resort, and fireworks at the Canyons Resort. Wednesday also marks the beginning of the nearly sold out Oakley Rodeo which will run through July 6th.
All this leads up to Fourth of July celebrations in Park City. Park City Special Events Manager Chris Phinney gives a layout of a few of the activities.
“Starts with a 5k run in the morning, a pancake breakfast," Phinney continued. "A parade up here on Main Street, down Park Ave. Some City Park activities and then fireworks and some bands at Park City Mountain Resort.”
The parade begins at 11:00 am at the top of Main Street in old town Park City.
“The parade them this year is ‘Hats Off to America,'" Phinney explained. "We're honoring our local Grand Marshall this year, Carl Workman. He was born and raised here in Park City. His first job actually was delivering papers for the Park Record, shoveling snow, he worked at the Egyptian, he was also a miner at the Daly West Mine. We’re proud to say he was a vet, in World War II, the South Pacific.”
Starting at 6:00 am on the Fourth of July parking will be closed on Main Street, Swede and Heber avenues, as well as Park Avenue from 9th to 15th streets. Roads will close to traffic around 8:00 am.
Phinney says parking in old town is for residents only.
“We’re upping the security in that area as well," Phinney said. "To help usher people through, keep the neighborhoods quiet. We’ll be ticketing people as well if we see you in there without a permit.”
Residents can get to festivities through a variety of means including bussing, biking, and driving.
Phinney says there are bike valets at 9th Street and the Mawhinney Lot.
Main Street Blue Square Permit Holders will have access to North Marsac Lots and upper Gateway levels, Additionally, ADA parking will be available at China Bridge and City Park.
Residents can park at the China Bridge parking garage for a $20 flat fee. Those interested in parking in China Bridge should plan to access it via Marsac Avenue.
Ultimately though the city is encouraging people not to drive and take advantage of the free transit.
“Make sure you come a little early," Phinney continued. "Be prepared, wear some comfortable shoes, bring a lot of water. Should be nice warm day. No rush to get there but please use the bus if you can. We have a lot of parking at the school district. The resorts have been great partners in letting us park there as well. So, Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley also out at the Canyons. This year we're adding Ecker Hill park and ride as well. So, there's a lot of parking you can take transit into town, ride your bike, walk. It’ll be a nice time to come in.”
After Independence Day there will still be a few more activities with the Oakley Rodeo continuing through Saturday, Deer Valley Music Festival Friday and Saturday night and Park Silly Market on Sunday.
