The Park City Museum is inviting the community to enjoy a free local’s day on Tuesday and then a lecture Tuesday night to accompany the traveling exhibit currently on display.
The Park City Museum free local’s day is supported by Michael Montgomery and the doors will be open from 11 to 6. While it’s called a free local’s day, it’s open to all.
Museum Director Sandra Morrison has announced the opening of an exhibit to celebrate women’s suffrage. 2020 is the hundredth-year anniversary of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote in the U.S.
Nina Allender was an artist, cartoonist and women’s rights activist. Morrison says she was an organizer in the women’s suffrage movement and because of her talent, was the official cartoonist for the National Women’s Party publications.
“She actually helped change the image of suffragettes from unattractive, selfish, rowdy women to more capable women who were passionate and intense and their dedication for the right for women to vote. And she created a character called the Allender girl who was young and slender and energetic.”
University of Utah Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Bradley Evans will deliver the lecture. She has written extensively and is considered the foremost authority on Utah women’s history.
Her lecture is called Remember the Ladies, the Fight for Women's Rights and she's going to talk about not only Utah's efforts with the 19th amendment that was originally introduced to Congress in 1879, so it took a long time to pass, but she's also going to talk about more recent events particularly the modern battle for the equal rights amendment in the 70s that she was actually personally involved in as well.”
This year’s holiday ornament features the Thayne’s Conveyor. It’s the big structure at the bottom of the Thayne’s lift on Park City Mountain.
“And we’ve been working on it all this past summer on stabilizing the conveyor that extends out onto the huge mine jump that's a big waste rockpile. And we’ll be working on it again next summer as well to make sure…it was on a very precipitous lean. You'll see this winter that parts of it are just being held up by giant stacks of lumber, so cribbing to hold it up while we work on it.”
It’s been 10-years since The Park City Museum expanded their Main Street location. They hold six or seven free days a year, usually designed to coincide with quiet periods on Main Street. The Nina Allender exhibit will be up until January 13th.
The lecture highlighting Allender’s work in women’s rights is at the Park City Museum Collection and Education Center at 2079 Sidewinder Drive in Prospector Square. It starts promptly at 5 pm on Tuesday and there’s plenty of parking.
