What can modern-day crocodiles, alligators, and gharials tell scientists about how to survive mass extinctions? Well, quite a bit.

When researching what it takes to survive, scientists have overlooked these crocodylomorphs, until now. Researchers from the University of Utah, the Natural History Museum of Utah, and the University of Central Oklahoma have looked to crocodylians, to try and understand why members of this unique group have survived through two mass extinctions.

Keegan Melstrom, assistant professor at the University of Central Oklahoma, talks about the findings, and how it could help other species survive the current mass extinction event.
