Humberto Basilio is a science and environmental journalist who recently wrote an article that appeared in Scientific American and Nature titled, “The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) Is Safe from Climate Collapse―for Now.”

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC, is a system of ocean currents that circulates water within the Atlantic Ocean.

There is concern that the AMOC could weaken when ice sheets in Greenland melt, releasing large quantities of fresh water into the ocean.

If this water, which is less dense than saltwater, reaches the North Atlantic current, it could potentially slow the rate at which waters in the AMOC sink to the seafloor, and the AMOC could collapse, but so far is hanging in there.
