Golden Spike Ceremony Re-Enactment On Saturday

PROMONTORY, UTAH (AP) - A re-enactment ceremony on Saturday will mark the 145 years that have passed since the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad.

The annual May 10 re-enactment of the driving of the Golden Spike has been held since the railroad's completion in 1869.

Officials from Central Pacific Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad marked the completion 145 years ago by driving four ceremonial railroad spikes into the tracks near Promontory, Utah.

Saturday's event will include two re-enactment ceremonies and a remembrance for those who lost their lives while building the railroad.

A special historic photograph will be recreated by those showing up in period costume.
