After the Utah Legislature passed HB77 this year, prohibiting pride flags from government buildings and public schools, Summit Pride has purchased its own flags and is making them available to the community with a donation-based system.
Summit Pride board member Virginia Solomon said the flags are available to residents in Summit and Wasatch counties to display at their homes and businesses.
“What we're hoping with this initiative is that we can just flood the Wasatch Back with rainbows, that there's so many businesses and private residences that are flying these flags that you don't even notice that they're missing from city property,” Solomon said on KPCW’s “Local News Hours” May 28.
“So, flags are available for pickup at the Park City Community Foundation. There is a QR code there. If you're so inclined to donate, we're, of course, happy to accept that. But we want to get the flags out more than we want this to be a fundraiser,” Solomon added.
Pride Month begins June 1 when the community is invited to join Summit Pride at the Park City Mountain main parking lot just below the bus stop for the pride march to City Park and a party afterwards.
“Gather there (Park City Mountain) around 4:30 p.m. and start to march down Lowell Avenue to Park Avenue up to City Park and then have a party starting at City Park at 5:30 p.m.,” Solomon said.
“For folks who don't feel like marching, please feel free to join us at the park. There'll be food and beverages available for purchase. If you just feel like marching and don't want to hang out at the park, that also is great. We'd love to have you, but hopefully all of it will be a fun time,” she added.
Talia Keys will provide live music and there will also be drag DJ performances throughout the evening.
Pride events continue throughout the month including a free screening of the documentary “Paris is Burning” on June 12 at 7 p.m. at the Santy Auditorium. The film is focused on the last century drag ball scene in New York City.
Coming up June 14 at Park City Library at 2 p.m. is a reading by author Laurie Hall. She served as a chief architect and religious leader for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before she was ex-communicated following her gender transition. Her book is titled “Dictates of Conscience: From Mormon High Priest to My New Life as a Woman.”
On June 29, Deer Valley Resort is hosting Pride on the Mountain Day. All lift pass purchases for hiking and biking will support Summit Pride. There will be live music, food trucks and beverages available for purchase.
