The Wasatch County Board of Education meets at the district building on 200 North in Heber.

The district is looking for a new superintendent to replace outgoing district leader Paul Sweat. Educators have until May 12 to apply.

Sweat announced April 8 he’s retiring after 34 years in the district, 10 of those as superintendent.

Now, the district has launched a national search for his replacement.

The school board said May 1 anyone interested in the role must apply by 4 p.m. on May 12 through the Utah School Boards Association website.

After that, candidates will be screened by a committee chosen by the district’s board of education and made up of parents, teachers and community members. The committee will recommend candidates for the board to interview.

The job posting shared by the USBA states the initial contract will be for two years. Applicants must have at least a master’s degree, along with teaching and school leadership experience.

The salary wasn’t included in the job description, but data from Transparent Utah shows Sweat earned about $241,000 in wages in 2024, plus nearly $98,000 in benefits.

The superintendent is charged with leading the district’s nine schools, plus the new high school opening in the fall of 2026. The district is the largest employer in Wasatch County with over 9,500 students enrolled for the 2024-2025 school year, according to the Utah State Board of Education.

School board members say they hope to announce the district’s next superintendent by July 1.
