UHaul Rideshare Leaves Park City

parkcity.org

People in need of a truck or car for a day used to be able to rent out a U-Haul pick-up or Prius, that were parked inside of China Bridge. Melissa Allison tells us why the program no longer exists in Park City:

The U-Haul rideshare program - approved by the city council in 2012 only required a smartphone to rent a vehicle before you drove off.

Due to some complications and sagging rentals, Environmental Sustainability Project Manager Celia Peterson said U-Haul decided to cancel the program.

“We needed to move the cars and that’s when someone thought to look - check on the insurances and found out that the contract is long expired," Peterson said. "So, we were trying to pull that together with U-Haul and they decided that they didn’t want to continue the program here anymore because the utilization rate was so low.”

Park City officials tried to renew the contract but with only 39 rentals in 2017 and rates that started at $4.95 an hour, Peterson said U-Haul decided it wasn’t worth it.

For those who need to rent a car or truck, Peterson said there are two car rentals in Park City. And for those who just need a ride, she said people can find several options at scpwchallenge.org.
