Homicide defendant makes first court appearance

A Snyderville Basin resident arrested for the alleged shooting death of his housemate earlier this month made his first appearance in Third District Court on Monday.

The defendant, 58-year-old James Kip Ramsdell, has been held without bail in the county jail for the shooting death of 50-year-old John Krieg.

According to the charges filed by the Summit County Attorney’s office, Krieg and Ramsdell were roommates in a Highland Estates residence. Over the night of October 6-7th, the two men had been drinking before getting into an altercation. Krieg died of a single gunshot to the chest.

On Monday, Ramsdell told Third District Court Judge Richard Mrazik that he had no resources to hire an attorney and was not working. He was assigned public defender David Mack.

Ramsdell has been jailed, given the county attorney’s contention that he is a flight risk and poses a substantial danger to the community, specifically to a witness who provided information on the incident.

Judge Mrazik set a status hearing in a week, on October 25th.

The first-degree murder charge against Ramsdell would carry a sentence of 15 years to life in prison if convicted. Ramsdell also faces an enhanced firearms charge, which would carry one additional minimum year.
