More Info: On February 12, 1908, Lincoln’s Birthday, six automobiles lined up side-by-side, for the start of the great New York-Paris auto race. Three French, one Italian, one German and one lone American automobile made it truly an international contest. Few people expected any of them to reach Paris. Just getting to Chicago seemed doubtful. Nearly a month later, the first of four contestants crossed the Utah state line. For the next 30 days, Utah’s culture, its cities, its citizens, and the deplorable state of its roads was front and center in the national press.
