Utah Lake Closed Due to Toxic Algae Bloom

Public health officials have closed Utah Lake.   They say a large, harmful algae bloom may pose a serious health risk to the public and animals.  Water samples from Utah Lake show the concentration of algae cells in the water are three times the threshold for closing a body of water.    The types of algae in the water release toxins that can affect brain, nervous system and liver function, according to officials with the Utah Department of Health.

The order to close the lake is in effect until further notice.   Health officials have previously issued advisories about algae blooms on the lake, but this is the first time the entire lake has been closed.

Satellite images show about 90 percent of the lake is covered by the algae bloom.  Results of a toxin analysis to determine the magnitude of toxicity are expected early next week.

The health department says you should contact your doctor or the Utah Poison Control Center at 800-222-1222 if you experience any of the following symptoms:  rashes, hives, blisters, allergy-type symptoms like a runny nose or sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea.   And you should contact a veterinarian if your animal has been in the water and shows signs of weakness, staggering, difficulty breathing, vomiting or convulsing.

If you have taken fish from the Lake since July 10, 2016, state officials recommend against eating the fish. Fishing in river areas near Utah Lake is not recommended until further notice.
