Election Preview: Wasatch County Attorney

Wasatch County Attorney Scott Sweat will be the only name on the ballot for the general election, but he will not be the only person running for the office. Wasatch County resident Kit Kosakowski has filed for an official write-in campaign.

Write-in Candidate Kit Kosakowski was defeated in the Republican Primary election for Wasatch County Attorney. Incumbent Scott Sweat won the Primary election defeating three other republicans, Tyler Berg, Tyler Dow and Kit Kosakowski.

KPCW reached out to Scott Sweat for this story through several phone calls to multiple numbers but received no response.

Kosakowski says she’s now running in the general election because she was asked to.

“Mostly because so many people asked me to. A member of county council asked me, a member of Heber City council and several people just out on the street who I was talking to asked me to also run as a write-in. Right now, there will only be one name on the ballot and that will be the incumbent and I think it’s important that people have a choice.”

Kosakowski, a resident of the Jordanelle area, says her years of experience practicing law in diverse places qualifies her for the county attorney position.

“I’ve been an attorney for many decades. I am licensed to practice in Virginia and Utah. My area that I mostly practice in is administrative law, environmental law and land use law. All of which are extremely important right now in Wasatch County because we are experiencing so much growth. I particularly think that administrative law is important because that’s the law of how government bodies go about making their decisions. I think that its important that government bodies follow the rules as much as they want their citizens to follow the rules. I would like to see people who come to public hearings and comment and testify I’d like them to feel that their comments have some weight. That the county is considering them in its decision making.”

Kosakowski says that there’s some key differences between her and current county attorney Scott Sweat.

“I think there’s a vast difference between us. He has a very narrow experience that is pretty much confined to the county. Whereas I have a very broad experience. I have advised all levels of government both local, state and the federal government. I worked on Capital Hill in Washington D.C. for several years. I am a very proactive person. I have been to many county council meetings and I have actually never seen the county attorney’s office answer a question on the spot. It’s always been, I have to go research that and get back to you. I’ve never seen anything come back to them in terms of advice to county council. I would hope to be more proactive, much greater participant in county council meetings and advising them on the spot. Helping them craft legislation that is in the interest of the county as a whole.”

That’s Wasatch County Attorney write-in candidate Kit Kosakowski she is running against Republican Incumbent Scott Sweat. KPCW reached out to Scott Sweat for this story through several phone calls to multiple numbers but received no response.
