18 Wasatch Back Firefighters Travel To Battle California Fires

Los Angeles County

18 firefighters from the Wasatch Back have joined with a group of over 70 firefighters from Utah to battle blazes in California.

The Woolsey Fire, located in Southern California has burned nearly 100,000 acres and is about one-third contained. The fire has also destroyed over 400 buildings in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. Park City Fire Chief Paul Hewitt reports that the district sent three personnel with the Utah group. Utah firefighters left over the weekend and finished their first shift on Tuesday evening.

“We sent three. A paramedic, a firefighter and an engine boss and a fire engine. They’ll be on 24-hours rest and then they’ll go back for another 24-hour shift. That’s the way it goes, one day on, one day off. They’re in Camarillo, California, that’s north of Los Angeles.

The Three firefighters from Park City are joined by nine personnel from Wasatch County Fire District, two from North Summit Fire District, and Four from Utah Fire and Forestry State Land.

Hewitt says the Utah personal are on a 12-day deployment where they’ll have 9 work days.

“We’re glad that we can be a part of helping them. I think, like I say, there’s 28 agencies that sent out fire engines in the state of Utah. There’s about 2,200 total firefighters in the state of Utah. So, you’re looking at a deployment of 70 to 80 firefighters. They should be back home before Thanksgiving.”
