North Summit Girls Track Team Claims 4th State Title In A Row

State Track and Field took place over the weekend at BYU’s facilities. All high schools in the Wasatch Back participated with the standout being the North Summit High School Girls’ team who won their 4th state championship in a row.

North Summit Girls’ team won the Utah 2A state track and field title due to a lot of depth. The braves won three individual titles, junior Audri Richins took first place in the 100-meter hurdles and first in the 300-meter hurdles, while fellow junior Teesha Richins placed first in the high jump.

All together Audri, Teesha, Alyssa, Sislee and Marci Richins won 10 individual medals. North Summit Coach Larry Jones says the Richins cousins all were a key part of the state title.

“Oh absolutely, yeah the Richins are pretty strong,” Jones said. “They’re multi-sport girls, but we’ve been blessed.”

Coach Jones said the key adjustment made by the team might have been asking Alyssa Richins to run some longer distance races this year.

“She was a sprinter last year, which she took seventh this year in the 100 (meter dash)," Jones explained. "We also asked her to move up into the 8(00-meter run) go a little distance. She ended up 2nd in the 8.”

Other medal winners for the Braves were Elizabeth Zwaylen, Brecklyn Murdock, Portia Lee and Nizhoni Buckway. The lady braves also won the 4X100 and Medley relay races.

The state title was not only the 4th in a row, but the 10th state championship over the past 11 years.

“We’ve been pretty fortunate," Jones continued. "The girls, they come and do really well and perform really well. You can’t ask any more out of them. You’d like to say its good coaching but it’s all about the kids, it’s not the coaching. The girls they come, and they work hard and it’s fun. We make it fun; they want to perform well.”

The North Summit Boys’ team took home medals in 5 events. The Braves were led by Cody White who finished 1st in the 800- and 1600-meter runs and 2nd in the 3200 while also anchoring the state championship medley relay.

The South Summit track team took home five medals. The Wildcat’s Logan Davis placed first in the 110-meter hurdles and 2nd in the 300-meter hurdles.

Park City took home three medals at the 4A state meet. Paul Baynes finished 2nd in the 400-meter dash and 5th in the 100-meter dash. The girl’s 4X400 relay team finished 3rd.
