Heber City Teenager Has First Hearing In Child Pornography Case

A Heber City teenager who was arrested for 20 counts of 2nd degree felony sexual exploitation of a minor had his first day in court Friday morning.

19-year-old Grant Johnson appeared briefly in court Friday morning for his first hearing.

In the initial hearing Johnson’s bail bond was lowered from $200,000 to $20,000. Fourth District Court Judge Jennifer Brown granted the lowering of the bail on the conditions that Johnson be given an ankle monitor, be placed on probation and receive psychological treatment.

Johnson was arrested on Tuesday May 21st after a Heber resident discovered an iPod with child pornography on it and turned it over to the police. According to a probable cause statement police discovered 60 images of child pornography. The iPod was registered to Johnson.

At the Friday morning hearing the first stipulation Judge Brown ordered was that an ankle monitor would be installed on the defendant while in jail. Johnson will be allowed to be in his home and leave for work, for psychological or medical treatment, and for necessities such as grocery shopping. Judge Brown also said that movements would need to be communicated with the monitoring system.

The judge also ordered that if Johnson is released, he will be placed on probation and required to contact Wasatch County Probation Office within 24 hours of release.

Finally, the judge also ordered that upon release Johnson begin psychological treatment.

After the hearing the prosecution told KPCW they agreed to the reduction in bail in order for the defendant to begin treatment as soon as possible.

Johnson’s next hearing was set for June 19th at 9:00 am.
