Heber City Council Holds Public Hearing Regarding Sale Of Surplus Cemetery Property

Heber City council meets in regular session tomorrow evening. Council will discuss a variety of items including a public hearing regarding the sale of cemetery surplus land.

Heber City Council meets in their regular meeting at 6:00 pm in council chambers at the Heber City building located on 75 North Main Street.

One item that will likely bring a lot of discussion is the public hearing regarding the sale of cemetery surplus land.

According to a staff report the city purchased land across the street from the cemetery to the West of 550 East, known as the Duke Property. The Duke Property was purchased in 2018 to be used as surplus land for the cemetery.

The city already owned a little over 12 acres to the north of the cemetery and nearly 14 acres to the east that was originally slated to be used in the cemetery.

The city is now considering selling the two parcels to the North and East of the cemetery as surplus. The money from the sale would be used by the city to create their portion of the Eastern Bypass.

The resolution being considered would issue an invitation to negotiate the sale of land with developers. As part of that sale, the developers would have to preserve and/or construct a road that would connect Mill Road and 550 West. The road would be part of the larger Eastern Bypass which will branch of US 40 North of town and connect to Center Street East of Mill Road.

Some citizens have expressed their opposition to the surplus cemetery sale. Residents have argued that the plan unnecessarily divides the cemetery along 550 East and that the funds for the road could be found elsewhere.
