Summit Land Conservancy is working on three properties in Eastern Summit county that, once under an easement will preserve a total of about 4500 acres of open space. To access some of the conservation funding they will need county support for the endeavor.

Summit Land Conservancy Conservation Director, Kate Sattelmeier says they’re seeking funding through both federal and state governments to place the three properties into an agricultural conservation easement.

“We’re seeking funding through the federal government through the NRCS agricultural land easement program as we have before. The federal government only pays part of the purchase price for the conservation easement. And, we’re seeking funds from the state through something called the Utah Quality Growth Commission."

Sattelmeier says part of the requirement for eligibility to receive the funding is that the municipal entity agrees to co-hold the conservation easement with the land trust which would be Summit Land Conservancy.

The state has set aside $3.4 million dollars for land conservation.

“The $3.4 million is state-wide so we are competing with other counties throughout the state. The state component, I’m thinking approximately about eight to 15 percent of the purchase price for the easement from the sate. The lion’s share is coming from the federal government so some of the projects, the federal government may contribute 50 percent to 75 percent.”

The Summit County Council will hear from Sattelmeier in Wednesday’s meeting. She’ll present the three properties which are the 4300 acre Wright Ranch in Echo Canyon, the 100 acres on Judd Lane in Hoytsville and the 105 acre Sargent conservation easement west of Coalville. A resolution is possible on all three.
